It is estimated that more than 10 million men in Japan are affected by erectile dysfunction (ED). However, in many cases, treatment is limited to prescribing medication that addresses ED alone.At the same time, it is well known that the age-related decline in male hormones\u2014particularly testosterone\u2014can lead not only to ED and reduced sexual function, but also to decreased motivation, lower energy levels, and a loss of positive outlook. Even if erectile function improves through ED medication, these broader symptoms often remain unaddressed, making it difficult to achieve a meaningful improvement in quality of life (QOL).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Is ED?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

ED is an abbreviation of the English term \u201cErectile Dysfunction.\u201d In Japanese, it is commonly referred to as erectile failure or erectile disorder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To understand the causes of ED, it is important to first understand how an erection occurs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When a man becomes sexually aroused, signals are sent from the brain through the nerves to the penis. This causes the blood vessels in the corpus cavernosum to dilate, increasing blood flow and resulting in an erection. If there is a problem with the nerves that transmit sexual stimulation or with the blood vessels that deliver blood to the penis, achieving an erection becomes difficult. Psychological factors such as stress can also cause ED. In addition, alcohol consumption can impair brain and nerve function, making erections more difficult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In men in their 30s and 40s, ED is often caused by psychological factors. In men aged 50 and older, ED is more commonly associated with dysfunction of the nerves that transmit sexual stimulation and the blood vessels responsible for supplying blood to the penis and maintaining an erection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Symptoms and Characteristics of ED<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Symptoms of ED vary from person to person, but ED is generally defined as the inability to achieve a satisfactory erection. This includes situations where an erection does not occur despite sexual arousal, where an erection occurs but is not firm enough, or where an erection cannot be maintained. All of these conditions are considered forms of ED.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

ED Treatment and Precautions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The primary treatment for ED is oral medication. Currently, three medications are approved for use in Japan: Viagra, Cialis, and Levitra. These medications do not cause an erection simply by being taken; rather, they help make it easier to achieve an erection when sexual stimulation occurs. Each drug differs in strength and duration of effect, and the choice is made based on medical judgment and the patient\u2019s preferences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Viagra was originally researched as a treatment for pulmonary arterial hypertension. During its development, an unexpected side effect\u2014improvement in erectile dysfunction\u2014was discovered, which led to its development as an ED treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Studies conducted during the development of Viagra reported that users were more likely to experience side effects such as facial flushing and indigestion. However, regarding pulmonary arterial hypertension, which was its original intended use, patients who took Viagra were found to have shorter hospital stays and were able to walk longer distances compared to those who took a placebo. Although Viagra is sometimes perceived as having negative effects on the heart and blood vessels, to date there have been no clear research findings demonstrating such adverse effects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Based on Viagra, which was not originally developed for ED, Levitra was created to reduce its effects on pulmonary blood vessels and enhance its effectiveness for ED, while Cialis was developed to provide a longer-lasting effect. For these reasons, when the goal is to treat ED, these medications are considered more suitable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
