What are the symptoms of pain during urination and a feeling of residual urine?

Painful urination refers to pain that occurs before, during, or after urination. Causes include inflammation of the bladder, which stores urine, the urethra, which is the passageway for urine that extends from the bladder, the prostate gland around the urethra, or the formation of a stone or malignant tumor somewhere between the kidney and the urinary exit.

Residual urine sensation, as the name suggests, is the feeling that urine remains. It is a symptom in which you feel as if all the urine has not been released even after urination. Causes include urine not passing through the urethra properly, or the bladder not contracting sufficiently. Also, even if there is no residual urine, you may feel the sensation of residual urine due to abnormal sensations in the bladder or urethra.

Things to keep in mind when you experience pain during urination or a feeling of residual urine

If you experience pain when urinating or a feeling of incomplete urination, it’s important not to force yourself to hold your pee. Sometimes, symptoms can improve simply by going to the toilet, so drinking plenty of fluids and going to the toilet frequently can be effective. Also, avoid leaving sanitary products on for long periods of time or washing your genitals too much, as this can lead to the proliferation of bacteria. Other important lifestyle habits include a balanced diet and adequate sleep. If your symptoms are severe, consult a medical institution, such as a urologist.

Possible causes of pain during urination and residual urine

There are many different diseases that can cause pain during urination or a feeling of incomplete urination. Therefore, it can be very difficult to tell which disease you have on your own, but if you have characteristic symptoms, it can be possible to deduce the cause.

Pyelonephritis

This is inflammation of the “renal pelvis,” which is the part of the kidney that sends out urine. If you have had sexual intercourse recently, or if you have other symptoms such as high fever, nausea, or vomiting, it is highly likely that you have this disease.

Cystitis

This refers to a condition in which bacteria grow in the bladder, causing inflammation. If you have to go to the bathroom frequently or your urine is cloudy, this may be the cause. Unlike pyelonephritis, fever rarely occurs.

Sexually transmitted diseases (chlamydia infection, gonorrhea)

This is an infectious disease that is often transmitted through sexual intercourse. If you have had sexual intercourse with an unspecified number of members of the opposite sex or with a sex worker, you should suspect this. The symptoms of sexually transmitted diseases vary depending on where the infection occurs, and they often manifest as urethritis in men, and cystitis or cervicitis in women.

Another possibility is urinary stones (a condition in which stones form in the urinary tract, causing blockages and severe pain). If you are experiencing severe pain, urinary stones are suspected.

Urgent illness accompanied by pain during urination and a feeling of residual urine

Among the conditions that cause pain during urination or a feeling of incomplete urination, there are not many that require urgent treatment. However, conditions such as pyelonephritis and urinary stones can cause high fever and severe pain. If you are even slightly worried, you should see a doctor as soon as possible.
